Celebrating Craft and Resilience: The Story of Mathilda Mamatseane

As part of Muzika Wa Afrika's Digital Arts and Cultural Exhibition in celebration of Women's Month, we are proud to highlight the inspiring story of Mathilda Mamatsene, a remarkable craft artist and Miss South Africa Disability finalist for 2024.

Born and raised in Soweto, Johannesburg, Mathilda's journey has been one of determination, creativity, and resilience. Currently residing in Gondeni la Mabilu village outside Thohoyandou in the Vhembe district, Mathilda holds a National Diploma and B-Tech Degree in Human Resources Management, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Labour Law from the University of Johannesburg. Her career has seen her excel in various roles within the private sector, government departments, and the banking sector, where she specialized in human resource and Anti-Money Laundering.

However, it is Mathilda's passion for art and craft that truly sets her apart. Professionally, she is a designer and creator of exquisite art and craft pieces, focusing on furniture and kitchen utensils crafted from a variety of natural woods, including Kiaat, Mahogany, Mutambapfunda, Mutondo and other natural strong trees. Her work is a testament to her deep connection with nature and her ability to transform raw materials into functional and beautiful pieces.

Mathilda's dedication to her craft has not gone unnoticed. In 2023, she was awarded the prestigious Murumba Cultural Parade Award in the Art and Craft category, a recognition of her exceptional talent and contribution to preserving cultural heritage through her work. Her creations range from farmhouse tables, coffee tables, and side tables to kitchen utensils such as Ndilo (wooden bowls and plates), Mutuli, Musi (mortar and pestle), wooden trays, key holders, and various decorative items.
